IoT and Beacons — A simple take on dynamic technology

How many of you go out for shopping (especially for buying grocery) with a list in hand or in mind? AND then forget atleast 2 items when you return home, tired and annoyed by huge payment queues. Now imagine, you walk in the aisle, and your trolley buzzes with a message saying your fridge has no milk, please pickup milk. Isn’t this awesome? Isn’t this smart? Well that’s what Internet of Things will do for you.

IOT is well understood with such examples, which are more consumer centric and will affect our lives. The main areas we will see the Internet of Things begin to take hold will be buildings (automation), the energy sector, healthcare, industrial & manufacturing, transportation, retail, security, consumer good & services and of course any IT networks.

Without getting into too much of details as to how this is done (which we will cover in next blog post) let us look at some examples which already are using IOT.

  1. UPS (one of the largest shipping companies in the world is using sensors on its delivery vehicles to monitor speed, miles per gallon, mileage, number of stops, and engine health — to save money, improve efficiency, and lessen its environmental impact.
  2. Disney world has a MagicBank, which is used by the vacationers to check in their hotel, pay for food, reserve spots for reservations etc. Along with this, Disney collects huge amount of data which when analyzed, they can see how is the movement of people inside the park, what are the hot selling rides, what timings are suitable to allow more people inside — so as to serve them best!
  3. John Deere, one of the leaders in this area, have field connect system that monitors environment conditions wirelessly and shares it with the farmers.
  4. Extension to the above example, operating equipment sitting at home, has made farmers ‘smart’ and thus, technology can accelerate agro-based industries, especially in India.

With such technology and huge amount of research is enabling a better, smart world around us, we will have (hopefully) more time for thinking — to change the world. To simplify technology. To amplify easy living.

Yopine | Hyperlocal Contextual Polling — Requirement from the client was to build a solution where user can create polls which can be shared around his/her vicinity.Our Solution — A Mobile solution where user can create polls and map it “nearby” to WiFis, sensors, and open networks. So anyone can answer/comment on poll even though he does not know the source. Isn’t that a good way of collecting data along with validation from people around you?

SmartHub | SmartHome automation System — ipad solution to control all devices within house.

Our Solution — We created an ipad solution, which controls household devices via smart sensors. User can also take pictures of house and create hotspots with actions. For e.g Take snapshot and create hotspot for light/Fan and then assign corresponding action to them. User can also create macros (hat tip — just google macros and you will get it) to link multiple actions together. So when a user comes home, automatically turn on AC — this command can be easily executed.

At iAuro, we love experimenting with new technology and devices. Side projects, which have great potential to mold into full-fledged products, are listed below.

Experiment Project 1 | Intelligent Beacon — Beacon is traditionally a dump device which keeps on transmitting signals.

Aim — We wanted to create a Beacon, which has capacity to store data and business rules.

Using Rasberry Pi, we created an intelligent beacon .We use this solution to track attendance of employees within the company. Also the in/out timings of employee are recorded.

Experiment Project 2 | Beacon based triangulation method — Beacon can detect where user is relative to that beacon. However it cannot detect the exact location of user within a room OR space.

Solution — We created a solution using beacons where we used triangulation to detect exact location of user within room. Now based on his/her exact location, solution can decide run-time what data/information/coupons can be pushed to that user. This is a classic case that can be used in shopping malls, where based on users location, relevant coupons can be pushed.
